Reporting situation of road traffic crashes resulting in injury and death in a suburban axel: A Community Based Study

Abstract:
Introduction: Since the prerequisite to improve traffic injuries and its prevention, is a system to collect data and complete information about it and the fact that in a system to collect comprehensive information on this issue does not exist. This study has tried to do a prospective study examined the differences in reporting the sources of information regarding the situation of traffic crashes resulting in injuries and deaths.
Methods: This prospective cohort study with minimum 30-day follow-up case subjects and length of one year is done using pre-prepared questionnaire and data from three police organizations, 115 emergency (EMS), and hospitals were collected and compared.
Results: After pooling the data from all organizations, it was revealed that during one year, 245 road traffic accidents occurred in Tehran–Abali road (with a 45 Kilometer radius) in which 434 people were either injured or deceased. Out of these crash injuries, police and EMS stated to be unaware of 67 and 51 cases, respectively. In other words, police, pre- hospital emergency services and hospitals
have reported 56.2%, 82.9% and 76.4% of the entire number of injuries or deaths respectively.

Conclusion: None of the information sources, including police and 115 emergency medical centers alone complete information resulting traffic injuries. It seems to develop and implement a system of data collection to focus on traffic accidents and at the same time multidisciplinary cooperation with police, emergency pre-hospital, hospitals, legal medicine organization and Red Crescent appears necessary.
